Confucius recognizes that national strength and stability rest on the foundation of family integrity. A society of strong, harmonious families naturally produces social order and national strength.
Conversely, the breakdown of family bonds leads to social dissolution. When parents and children are estranged, when spouses distrust each other, when siblings quarrel, the bonds of society loosen.
This is not isolationist philosophy but recognition that the intimate sphere shapes the public sphere. The qualities learned in the family — respect, responsibility, care — are the virtues that hold society together.
