Marcus Aurelius

Marcus Aurelius (121 CE–180 CE) was a Roman Emperor and a preeminent Stoic philosopher who ruled at the pinnacle of the Roman Empire's power. Born into a prominent Roman patrician family, he was groomed for leadership from an early age and ascended to the imperial throne in 161 CE. His reign was defined by near-constant military crises, administrative challenges, and the devastating Antonine Plague. Amidst these immense pressures, he wrote a private journal that was never intended for publication, now universally known as the Meditations. Written in Greek, this text is a masterpiece of practical ethics and self-reckoning, documenting his commitment to duty, emotional resilience, acceptance of mortality, and the conscious suppression of ego in the pursuit of justice and the common good.
