Averroes
Averroes (Ibn Rushd, 1126–1198) was an Andalusian Muslim polymath, jurist, and physician whose philosophical commentaries profoundly influenced both Islamic and Western Christian scholastic thought. Born in Córdoba, Spain, he served as a chief judge (qadi) and court physician, producing extensive works across jurisprudence, medicine, astronomy, and philosophy. Best known for his detailed, systematic commentaries on Aristotle, Averroes sought to reconcile Islamic theology with Aristotelian rationalism, arguing in his treatise The Decisive Treatise that philosophy and religious revelation are compatible paths to the same ultimate truth. His defense of philosophy against orthodox theological attacks, notably in The Incoherence of the Incoherence, sparked intense intellectual debate, and his translated Latin works became foundational to the development of late-medieval European universities.
