Seneca
Seneca (Lucius Annaeus Seneca, c. 4 BCE–65 CE) was a Roman statesman, philosopher, and dramatist who served as a leading intellectual figure of the Late Stoic school during the early Roman Empire. Born in Córdoba, Spain, and raised in Rome, Seneca achieved immense wealth and political prominence as a brilliant orator and lawyer before being exiled to Corsica on charges of adultery. Recalled to the capital to serve as the tutor and later prime minister to the young Emperor Nero, Seneca effectively governed the empire during the early, stable years of Nero's reign. His extensive philosophical writings—including Letters from a Stoic (Epistulae Morales ad Lucilium), On the Shortness of Life, and On Anger—offered practical, humanistic guidance on managing emotional impulses, accepting adversity, and cultivating tranquility (ataraxia), while his dark, violent tragedies profoundly reshaped European drama.
