Ram Mohan Roy
Raja Ram Mohan Roy (1772–1833) was a Bengali reformer, scholar, and writer often regarded as the father of modern India. He founded the Atmiya Sabha in 1815 and the Brahmo Sabha in 1828, the forerunner of the Brahmo Samaj. He campaigned against sati and for English-language education, and he translated Upanishadic and Vedanta texts into English and Bengali. His Tuhfat-ul-Muwahhidin (1809) and The Precepts of Jesus (1820) reflect his monotheist and comparative approach to religion. He died in Bristol in 1833.
