Plato

Plato (c. 428 BCE–c. 348 BCE) was an Athenian philosopher who laid the literal foundations of Western philosophy, science, and political thought. A student of Socrates and the founder of the Academy in Athens—the first institution of higher learning in the Western world—Plato authored a vast corpus of philosophical dialogues that explored virtue, justice, and the nature of reality. His monumental philosophical framework is centered on the Theory of Forms, which posits that the material world is merely a flawed shadow of an eternal, unchangeable realm of abstract truths. In his masterwork, The Republic, he synthesized this metaphysics with political philosophy, imagining an ideal state governed by intellectual meritocracy and philosopher-kings, famously illustrated through his Allegory of the Cave.
