Martin Heidegger

Martin Heidegger (1889 CE–1976 CE) was a German philosopher whose phenomenological investigation of Being fundamentally reshaped twentieth-century continental philosophy, particularly through the analytic of existence developed in Sein und Zeit (Being and Time, 1927 CE). Rather than treating Being as another entity within the inventory of beings, Heidegger distinguished Sein from Seiendes and made the question of the meaning of Being the central problem of fundamental ontology, investigating it through Dasein, the being for whom Being is disclosed as an issue. In Being and Time, Dasein is characterized through structures including being-in-the-world, thrownness, understanding, attunement, discourse, being-with-others, care (Sorge), and being-toward-death, with authenticity understood not as possession of a fixed inner identity but as a mode of existence in which Dasein confronts its own finite possibilities rather than allowing its possibilities to be dictated by das Man, the anonymous social 'they.' Heidegger's analysis of temporality identifies ecstatic temporality as the ontological horizon through which Dasein's existence becomes intelligible, while his account of anxiety distinguishes it from ordinary fear by showing how anxiety discloses the contingency and uncanniness of existence as such. After Being and Time, Heidegger increasingly shifted from the analytic of Dasein toward the history of Being, examining concepts including Ereignis, unconcealment (aletheia), technology, and the distinction between calculative and meditative thinking. His intellectual biography also contains a historically consequential political episode: he became Rector of the University of Freiburg in April 1933 CE, joined the National Socialist German Workers' Party on 1 May 1933 CE, participated in the university's institutional Gleichschaltung, resigned the rectorship in April 1934 CE, and remained a party member until the collapse of the Nazi regime in 1945 CE.
