Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749–1832) was a German poet, dramatist, novelist, and scientist who stands as one of the most versatile and influential intellectual figures of the Romantic era and modernity itself. Born in Frankfurt, Goethe experienced precocious literary success with The Sorrows of Young Werther (1774) before embarking on a lifelong career of literary creation and scientific investigation. His major works include Faust (Parts I and II, 1808 and 1832), Wilhelm Meister's Apprenticeship (1796), Elective Affinities (1809), and the Poetry and Truth autobiography.
