Cicero

Cicero (Marcus Tullius Cicero, 106 BCE–43 BCE) was a Roman statesman, orator, lawyer, and philosopher whose extensive writings fundamentally shaped Latin prose, Western rhetoric, and classical political thought. Born in Arpinum, Cicero ascended to the highest Roman political office of consul in 63 BCE, during which he famously suppressed the Catilinarian conspiracy to overthrow the Roman Republic. Following the rise of Julius Caesar's dictatorship and Cicero's subsequent political marginalization, he dedicated his later years to translating Greek philosophical concepts into Latin, introducing an entirely new philosophical vocabulary to the Roman world. His major works—including political treatises like De Re Publica (On the Republic) and De Legibus (On the Laws), and ethical texts like De Officiis (On Duties)—synthesized Stoic, Academic Skeptic, and Peripatetic traditions, championing natural law, civic virtue, and the preservation of republican constitutionalism before his assassination by political opponents.
