Augustine of Hippo

Augustine of Hippo (354–430) was a theologian, philosopher, and Bishop of Hippo Regius in Roman North Africa, whose writings fundamentally shaped Western Christianity and philosophy. Born in Thagaste, he pursued a career as a rhetorician in Carthage, Rome, and Milan, undergoing a profound spiritual conversion in 386 that he later chronicled in Confessions, a foundational work of Western autobiography. Augustine's intellectual output was vast; his monumental text The City of God formulated a comprehensive Christian philosophy of history and politics in response to the decline of the Roman Empire, while On the Trinity systematically defined core Christian dogma. His theological doctrines on original sin, divine grace, and predestination deeply influenced both medieval Catholic scholasticism and the 16th-century Protestant Reformation, establishing him as one of the most influential Church Fathers.
